Kitchen Tall Unit Guide: Types, Sizes and Planning Tips for Madurai Homes

· 7 min read · Aaganyan Hardwares

Most Indian kitchens run out of storage long before they run out of floor space. Rice, dal, oil cans, masala tins, snacks and festival stock all compete for the same few base cabinets. A kitchen tall unit solves this by using height instead of width. This guide explains what a tall unit is, the main types of pantry mechanism, how to size one, and the mistakes we see most often when Madurai homeowners and carpenters plan them.

What is a kitchen tall unit?

A kitchen tall unit is a full-height cabinet, usually running from the floor (or plinth) to about the top line of the wall cabinets, that holds a pantry mechanism instead of fixed shelves. The mechanism brings the stored items out to you, so nothing gets lost at the back of a deep shelf. In simple terms: a tall unit is a vertical pantry built into your modular kitchen.

It is different from a tall cabinet with plain shelves. With fixed shelves you still have to reach into a deep, dark space. With a tall unit mechanism, the shelves slide or swing out, and you can see and reach every item from the front or the sides.

The three main types of tall unit mechanism

1. Full pull-out pantry

A single tall frame carries a stack of baskets, usually five or six levels, and the whole frame glides out on heavy-duty runners fixed at the top and bottom of the cabinet. When it is open you can reach the shelves from both sides. This is the most popular type in Indian modular kitchens because it is simple to use and works in narrow widths.

2. Door-mounted pantry

Here the baskets are fixed to the back of a hinged shutter, and the shutter swings open like a normal door. It is useful where there is not much floor space in front of the cabinet for a pull-out frame to come out, for example in a narrow galley kitchen. The trade-off is that storage depth is shallower, so it suits bottles, jars and packets rather than large containers.

3. Swing-out or larder unit

A larder or swing-out unit combines baskets on the door with internal frames that swing out together when the door opens. It gives the most storage of the three types and is usually chosen for wider cabinets in larger kitchens. It also needs the most careful planning, because the door, the inner frames and the hinges must all clear each other.

Comparison: which type suits your kitchen?

Type Best for Typical width Watch out for
Full pull-out pantry Most homes; narrow gaps beside the fridge or hob Narrow to medium Needs clear floor space in front to pull out fully
Door-mounted pantry Narrow galley kitchens; bottles and jars Narrow to medium Shallower storage; hinge must take the extra door weight
Swing-out / larder Larger kitchens wanting maximum storage Medium to wide Most complex to plan; needs exact carcass sizes

Widths vary by brand and model, and many manufacturers offer tall pantry units for cabinet widths from around 300 mm up to 600 mm, with heights from roughly 1,800 mm upwards. Always take the exact cabinet size from the spec sheet of the model you choose, not from a general guide like this one.

How to measure for a kitchen tall unit

Getting the measurements right matters more than choosing the brand. Use this order:

  • Clear internal width: the space between the two side panels inside the cabinet, not the outside width. The mechanism is sized to this number.
  • Clear internal height: from the top of the bottom panel to the underside of the top panel. Tall unit frames usually come in height ranges, so the frame must fall within its range.
  • Internal depth: from the back of the shutter line to the back panel. Check for pipes, gas lines or wiring behind the cabinet.
  • Opening space: how far the frame or door needs to come out, and whether a wall, fridge or chimney duct will block it.
  • Load: what you plan to store. Rice and oil are heavy. Check the load rating of the mechanism against your real use.

Where to place a tall unit in the kitchen

The most practical spot is at the end of a counter run, so the tall unit does not break your working surface. Next to the fridge is a common choice, because both are tall and line up neatly. Avoid placing it right beside the hob: heat and oil fumes are not good for stored food, and you lose landing space for hot vessels. In L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens, the end of the longer arm usually works best.

Common mistakes to avoid

Building the cabinet before choosing the mechanism

This is the most frequent problem we see. The carpenter builds a tall cabinet to a convenient size, and only then does the family go looking for a pantry mechanism that fits. Choose the mechanism first, note its required carcass size, and then build the cabinet to suit it.

Using a shutter that is too thin or too heavy

The shutter carries the front of the frame or the door baskets. It must be thick and stable enough to hold the fixing screws, and the hinges or runners must be rated for its weight.

Forgetting the skirting and plinth

The bottom runner of a pull-out pantry sits on the cabinet base. If the plinth height or the floor level changes along the kitchen, the unit can bind or run unevenly. Level the base first.

Overloading the top baskets

Keep heavy items such as oil cans and rice containers in the lower baskets, and lighter packets higher up. This keeps the frame stable and easier to pull.

Kitchen tall unit vs pull-out basket: what is the difference?

A pull-out basket sits inside a base cabinet, under the counter, and holds plates, bowls or cutlery. A kitchen tall unit is a full-height cabinet holding several levels of baskets on one frame or door, and is mainly used as a dry pantry. Many kitchens use both: pull-out baskets near the hob and sink for daily vessels, and a tall unit at the end of the counter for groceries.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kitchen tall unit?

A kitchen tall unit is a full-height kitchen cabinet fitted with a pantry mechanism, such as a pull-out frame or door-mounted baskets, so that stored items come out to you instead of staying at the back of deep shelves.

What width should a kitchen tall unit be?

It depends on the mechanism. Many brands make tall pantry units for cabinet widths from about 300 mm to 600 mm. Choose the model first and build the cabinet to the size given in its spec sheet.

Is a pull-out pantry better than a door-mounted pantry?

A full pull-out pantry gives deeper storage and access from both sides. A door-mounted pantry suits kitchens with little space in front of the cabinet, but its storage is shallower. Neither is better for every kitchen.

Where should a tall unit go in a modular kitchen?

Usually at the end of a counter run or beside the fridge, so it does not interrupt the working surface. Avoid placing it right next to the hob.

Can a tall unit be added to an existing kitchen?

Often yes, if there is a full-height space and the cabinet can be built or adjusted to the mechanism's required size. Measure the clear internal width, height and depth and check the opening space first.
